5 Things to Know About Unlimited Broadband Plans

Thanks to the omnipresent Internet connectivity, almost everybody can access one of other form of mobile network. However, providing requisite infrastructure and bandwidth and obtaining obligatory authorizations is a phenomenal task that involves an enormous investment. Unfortunately, the large Internet service provider companies who connect you to the Internet tend to deceive you by being devious about their terms of service and creating expectations through advertisements that are sooner or later met with discontent.

Here are the 5 Things to know about unlimited broadband plans:

1. Definition of broadband:

Broadband points to the facility to access multiple data channels over a single telecom medium by making use of multiplexing techniques. In laymen terms, it is the fast Internet connectivity delivered through cable, wireless medium, and optical fibre. With regard to industry standards, broadband involves specific prerequisites for connectivity and minimum speed. In India, an ISP must deliver no less than 256 kbps to be eligible as broadband.

2. Understand data usage limit:

While buying broadband plans in Delhi, you need to first understand what usage limit is.
Usage is the measurement of the highest throughput in your Internet account that is not just limited to downloads but, includes uploads as well. Thus, if you believe that only the 30 MB presentation that you downloaded comprises your data usage, you probably failed to include the 3 GB of data that you stored on your cloud drive into your usage limit. So, unknowingly you crossed your data limit and even can’t blame the service provider who had probably made this clear in its ‘terms of service’.

3. Contention ratio:

Contention ratio indicates the highest number of customers that are allowed to share the broadband with you. Many ISPs ignore the quality aspect of the broadband by hosting an excessive number of subscribers per connection. This topples broadband speeds and chokes networks. As the number of users taking Unlimited broadband plans is increasing each day, the connection speed has dropped and the quality has deteriorated as servers bounce requests because of lack of bandwidth.

4. Fair Usage Policy:

By introducing this policy, the service provider puts a random usage limit on their broadband plans tariff and reduces the connection speed when you reach that limit. TRAI regulations mandate that under FUP, the service provider must intimate users when 80% of their usage has been touched. The users should not be held liable for not checking their usage as ISPs has made this policy in the first place. Compelling users to check ISP website and spend more of their data limit can be measured as a malpractice.

5. Bytes of Bits:

Another thing to be careful about is the difference between MB (Megabytes) and Mb (Megabits). While the former indicates the size of data, for instance, a 10 MB file, the latter is an indicator of your connection speed. If you are looking for broadband plans, find out the actual speeds that you are entitled to and compare the ISP's advertised speed to the actual download speed. A 20MB file on your 1Mbps line will take 160 seconds to download and not 20 seconds! Remember 1 byte = 8 bits, so if your ISP provides a 1Mbps line, the ideal speed should be about 128KBps (1/8th of the connection speed), if you are the only one using that connection.
